Michael John Martin MP (born 3 July 1945) is the current Speaker of the House of Commons in the United Kingdom. He will resign from the position on 21 June 2009 as a result of diminishing parliamentary and public confidence due to his role in the parliamentary expenses scandal, being the first Speaker to be forced out of the office since John Trevor in 1695. He will also resign as an MP on the same date, forcing a by-election in his constituency of Glasgow North East.

On May 19th 2009, Martin announced that he would be stepping down as Speaker of the House of Commons, and MP. HE is the first Speaker to do so in 314 years, since John Trevor in 1695.
